Rutger van Schaardenburg wins third Delta Lloyd title in Laser

By | All news, Laser

The second Dutch win of the day went to Rutger van Schaardenburg (NED), but he didn’t have it all his own way in the decisive medal race. The Laser fleet was one of the closest fleets of the week with Jeemin Ha (KOR) winning three races. However Ha didn’t get the best of the medal race to place to place seventh to take the silver. Juan Maegli (GUA) gave himself the best chance of a medal by leading the medal race from start to finish, but Luke Elliott (AUS) hung on for second to secure the bronze. Van Schaardenburg said…

Keeping it in the family – Juan Maegli sets sail for third Olympics

By | Laser

For 27 year old Juan Maegli (GUA), Olympic sailing is something of a family tradition. His father, Juan Maegli (GUA) sailed in three Olympics – the 470 in 1976 and the Finn in 1980 and 1984. However unlike his father, the younger Maegli has broken into the top 10 and was even a medal prospect in London in 2012. He is now preparing for his third Olympic Games in Rio and is currently in third place at the 2016 Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik after winning both races on the third day of the competition. After a 33rd in Qingdao…

Heiner: “Ik mis deze week scherpte.”

By | Laser, News

Rodney’s lonely road to Rio

By | Laser, News

The Seychelles may not be known for its sailing history, but this small archipelago in the Indian Ocean actually has a long association with the Laser class in the Olympic Games. Allan Julie has represented the Seychelles at multiple Olympiads ever since Atlanta 1996, when he was just 19 years old. Now aged 38, Julie may well be thinking about going again, although he has also been coaching fellow Laser sailor from the Seychelles, Rodney Govinden, who is looking to give his mentor a good run for his money. “It’s been my dream goal to take part in an Olympics,”…

By | Laser, News
