While most sailors are well into their preparation for the Rio Olympics, a few are still trying to qualify. Among those are the Spanish 49er sailors. The 2016 Delta Lloyd Regatta is the selection event and there are four teams here vying for a ticket to Rio after a complex process. WINNERS: Spanish gold leaves kiwis with silver

Diego Botin and Iago Lopez snatched a surprise gold for Spain in the 49er after a Medal Race capsize by the leading New Zealanders, Marcus Hansen and Josh Porebski. “We’re very pleased,” said Botin. “We only teamed up last December and it’s great to win here together.” Porebski couldn’t really explain what happened in the capsize. “We’d just got the kite up, then the rudder loaded up, got cavitation and lost steerage. Video: It was a strong-wind opening day for the 700 boats competing at the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik, Holland. Poland’s world-class windsurfing squad has always enjoyed the strong breeze, and Pawel Tarnoski leads the RSX men’s windsurfer division after a perfect day of three race victories. Zofia Noceti-Klepacka leads the RSX women’s division with scores of 2,1,2. The Delta Lloyd Regatta has decided, together with the ISAF and the international 49er class, to open the 49erFX class to all genders. It is now possible to mix teams female / male or subscribe in the class with men teams as well. The women’s only teams are still in the race for the ISAF ranking and qualification for sailing the World Cup in Weymouth. The 49er class is an upcoming class.
